TCM Consultation

Usually, people see a health care professional because they feel unwell or something is wrong. In the world of Chinese medicine, people are encouraged to consult a TCM practitioner before anything goes wrong, to advise them on how to maintain health, optimise well-being and prevent illness.

If you visit a TCM practitioner with a specific complaint, he or she will assess your situation in its full context.

The first visit usually takes about 45 minutes (without acupuncture) and 90 minutes (with acupuncture). With the help of an interpreter, the doctor will take a detailed medical history (onset of the main problems, history of treatment and medication, differentiation of symptoms associated with TCM). During the first examination, the doctor will spend some time getting to know you and your health problems. They may ask you a series of questions about your symptoms, diet, exercise, sleeping habits, emotional states, and anything else that can provide insight into your health. The practitioner will also use diagnostic tools unique to acupuncture and TCM, such as tongue and pulse diagnostics.

Your treatment plan

Once the doctor has gathered enough information, you will receive a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan explaining:

●     Your underlying imbalances

●     Treatment timeline

●     What types of treatment you will receive

●     How to get the most out of your treatment

For the best treatment results, please note:

●     Please arrive on time.

●     Do not eat a large meal or have an empty stomach before your appointment

●     Wear loose and comfortable clothes

●     Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.

●     Discuss your symptoms, avoid self-diagnosis

●     Bring test or imaging results, if available

●     Do not brush your tongue or chew gum before your visit

●     Avoid vigorous physical activity after an acupuncture session

●     Follow the treatment plan between visits

●     Attend all treatments, as each visit builds on the previous one

How the treatment works

Each person is different, so the doctor will draw up an individual plan based on the person's needs and condition. Herbal medicine is an important aspect of acupuncture and TCM. It can work alone or in combination with acupuncture, depending on the patient's condition.

During acupuncture sessions, thin, sterile needles will be inserted into specific acupuncture points along the meridian pathways. The doctor will focus on acupuncture points associated with specific organs, depending on your unique problems and symptoms. Your doctor may also include other related therapies in your treatment plan, such as cupping, Tuina massage or moxibustion.

Your role in the treatment process

Your actions are a key component of your treatment plan. Adjusting your diet and committing to a healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take for your well-being. Together with your doctor, you can heal imbalances and help yourself achieve harmony and balance.

Even after your symptoms have been resolved, acupuncture can help you stay healthy and possibly prevent future imbalances. The more you incorporate the principles of TCM into your life, the more you will learn to nurture your body, mind and spirit.

Acupuncture and TCM are not an instant solution

True healing takes time and dedication. Depending on your current state of health and symptoms, you may feel better immediately, or you may need treatment over weeks, months or years to achieve the results you want. Your doctor can tell you what to expect. With a little patience and an open mind, you will be on your way to health and vitality.

Acupuncture and TCM offer a safe and effective system of holistic health care. This natural approach can relieve symptoms and improve your overall health.

By taking the right steps and planting the seeds of health, you are on the way to a healthier you.
